The Asterix Project

The Goths, as depicted in Asterix and the Goths are very strict men (much more than the Romans) showing intrest in military helmets and war drills. They, like the Romans, have big plans for the future however that will eventuly lead to civil war. It all seemed easy: go capture a druid and conquer Rome and Gaul. However that was a big mistake as the indomitable Gauls never give up. Their chief (first Metric than Rhetoric and so on) is very cunnig but even that was no match for Getafix's brain. It appears, from their appearances in later books, that later on the Goths seem to have lost some of their mean attitude.

Trivia[]

  • The Goths' "-ic" suffix (such as Tartaric) is based on Alaric, a Germanic chieftain who gained notoriety for sacking Rome in 410 AD.
  • The Goths' attire were based on First World War German Empire, which is symbolized with Pickelhaube helmets.
  • Despite their antagonistic status, many of them would enlist in Roman Army as a historical reflection of Germanic and other non-Romans being recruited in exchange for citizenship at the end of service.
  • Historically, Goths as a tribe came into chronicles of Roman history as a major tribe operating in Black Sea region around 3rd Century AD, which would be 350 years after the comic's present setting.
