Asterix: The Mansions of the Gods, also titled Asterix and Obelix: Mansion of the Gods, is a 2014 French-Belgian 3D computer-animated adventure family comedy film written and co-directed by Alexandre Astier, and is based on the seventeenth . The film sticks to the book's plot very closely while also expanding on it. It was the first Asterix film animated in 3D.
The film was theatrically released on 26 November 2014 by SND Films in France across 696 movie theatres. It received generally favorable reviews and has grossed over $34 million on a €31 million budget. It received a IFMCA Award nomination for Best Original Score for an Animated Feature Film.
Plot
Because of the Gauls' ongoing resistance, in which they successfully resisted the Roman Empire time and time again, a frustrated Julius Caesar, the dictator of Rome, devises a new scheme to conquer the Gauls: A series of luxurious apartments will be constructed in the forest near the Gauls' village as a means to force them to adapt to Roman civilization. To ensure its success, Caesar entrusts the project to architect Squareonthehypothenus. When the Senators tried to make up of a good name for the apartments, Senator Prospectus decided to call them "The Mansions of the Gods". Though skeptical at first, Caesar eventually accepts the name.
During a boar hunt, Asterix and Obelix were fighting over a boar until they discover the Mansions’ construction site, where Squaroenthehypothenus is marking the spot on where the apartments will be constructed. After his buttocks were bitten by an enraged Dogmatix, Squaroenthehypothenus angrily confronts Asterix and Obelix over trespassing but was immediately sent flying into the air by Obelix. The two Gauls then returned to their coastal village where a brawl is ensuing amongst their fellow Gauls. During the chaos, Asterix and Obelix relayed their discovery of the construction site to Chief Vitalstatistix and village druid Getafix.
Squaronthehypothenus and the Roman legion commanded by Centurion Somniferus began ordering slaves to deforest the surrounding area but on the advise on that they work at night so as to avoid the Gauls. However, they and the legion cowardly retreated back to camp before they could continue due to their fear of the Gauls, much to Somniferus' frustration. The next day, while hunting boar, Asterix and Obelix came across a tree that the slaves have uprooted before Obelix replants it himself. When the Romans discovered this the next night they ordered the slaves to uproot it, however, they are unaware that Asterix, Obelix, and Getafix are quietly observing from a hiding place. As days and nights passed, Asterix and Obelix attempt to counteract the Romans’ efforts using magic acorns provided by Getafix, which instantly sprout into full trees upon planting. This continued until the slaves were rendered exhausted.
Back in Rome, Julius Caesar expresses displeasure that construction on the Mansions of the Gods hasn't even begun yet. He is even angered when learning that the citizens of Rome don't want to live in the apartments. Coming up with an idea to raise the Roman citizens' interests in the Mansions of the Gods, Senator Prospectus holds a grand lottery where the winner will be given a free apartment in the Mansions. The winner of the lottery is a family consisting of Anonymous, his wife Dulcia, and their son Mischiefus.
When the Roman legion and slaves discovered newly-grown planted trees, unaware that it is the work of Asterix and Obelix, Centurion Somniferus decides to give up on their efforts and end the project, however a frustrated and erratic Squaronthehypothenus refuses and threatens to work the slaves to death all so he could work on the Mansions of the Gods until the end. Hearing this, Asterix and Obelix reported it to Vitalstatistix, who advised that the slaves be given the magic potion while Getafix came up with a plan. Invading the Roman camp to free the slaves, Asterix and Obelix provided them with magic potion as a means to escape and protect themselves. Unfortunately, this backfires when the slaves used the magic potion to barter for the same pay as the legionaries, along with their freedom and apartments for each of them when they finished construction. Though Squaronthehypothenus opposes this, Somniferus agrees to the slaves' barter. Immediately getting to work, the slaves, with the magic potion, rapidly advance construction on the Mansions of the Gods, eventually finishing one apartment building.
When this was discovered by Asterix and Obelix, the former confronts one of the slaves for abusing the magic potion, and the slave reveals of their barter with the Romans. The Gauls prepares to attack and demolish the mansions only to discover that it is already being populated by Roman civilians, who had just arrived. Realising they cannot harm the civilians, the Gauls return to the village to plan how to make them leave. Meanwhile Anonymus, Dulcia and Mischiefus, the family that won the lottery from earlier, are denied their apartments by Squaronthehypothenus, as he notes that they are lacking required documents. While walking with his parents through the forest looking for a place to stay, Mischiefus encounters and befriends Obelix and Dogmatix. When Obelix brings them to the village, the Gauls reluctantly agree to temporarily accommodate the family.
Asterix, Obelix and Getafix tried to make the civilians leave, by causing heavy rain, only for it to backfire when the civilians embraced it as a natural part of life in Brittany. Meanwhile, when Dulcia and Mischiefus went shopping at Unhygienix's fish market, the latter reveals that his product dubiously costs only 1 Sesterce, but is shocked when Dulcia reveals that in Rome, they are charged for five Sesterce. Knowing that he'll earn more by that amount, Unhygienix tries to assume that the cost of his product may be that amount if it were by the sea, only for Dulcia and Mischiefus to reveal that Rome is by the sea. After being paid five Sesterce for three fish, Unhygienix's wife, Bacteria, disgustingly reveals to her husband that if he were in Rome, he'll have to sell five Sesterce a piece.
At the Mansions of the Gods, Squaronthehypothenus still refused to give Anonymous and his family their apartment, since they still lacked more required documents. That evening, Obelix began causing a noise pollution, where he noisily sculpts a menhir, while at the same time Getafix conjures another heavy rainstorm, unfortunately, much like before, these methods ended up backfiring. The next day, the Roman civilians begin shopping in the village, causing an escalating price war between Unhygienix and blacksmith Fulliautomatix over fish and 'antique' weaponry. Meanwhile, Anonymus is still denied an apartment in the Mansions of the Gods. That night, Asterix, Obelix, and Getafix uses a noxious stench from stinky fish to force the civilians to leave while Obelix and Getafix use the same methods from before, but like the previous nights, their attempts only backfired. At the village, Unhygienix and Fulliautomatix's price war began to intensify, to the point where they began throwing their products at each other. A frustrated and Anonymous and Mischiefus returns to Squaronthehypothenus with a cartload of documents they had retrieved, and this finally satisfied the latter, who then gives the two the key to their apartment.
Later, as construction on the second apartment building is nearing completion, an event is being held in the plaza where Senator Prospectus congratulates the slaves for their work but it soon soured when Centurion Somniferus was forced to reveal of his promise to the slaves of giving them freedom as well as having paid and giving them their apartments in the mansions of the Gods. He justifies these as avoiding conflict. Deciding to handle the situation himself, Prospectus proceeded to grant the slaves there freedom. However, he also makes them hand over their keys to their apartments due to their status as slaves as well as on having to pay rent, which is fifty Sesterce a week. However, he offers the slaves positions in the construction with a salary of fifteen Sesterce a week, which the slaves reluctantly accepted before they are sent back to work by Squaronthehypothenus.
Meanwhile, when Asterix and Obelix return to the village, they were appalled with what the village has become, as since many more Roman civilians had arrived, it turned into a marketplace, leaves with Obelix, Getafix, Dogmatix and Cacofonix to get their own apartment at the Mansions of the Gods. While Squaronthehypotenus is reluctant to allow their stay, Senator Prospectus allows them to stay as part of Caesar's plan.
Caesar then enacts the next phase of the plan by offering free apartments to the Gauls. In another attempt to make the roman civilians leave, Asterix has Cacofonix to sing deafeningly loud outside the mansions. This almost works until the rest of the Gauls shows up to silence Cacofonix and move into their new apartments.
Caesar begins the final part of his plan, razing the village. The legion however refuses to cooperate with Getafix and Obelix still at large. Getafix, Mischiefus and Dogmatix are captured, and held in the Mansions reception. Obelix faints from hunger next to the Roman legion while searching for the three, and is thrown into a chamber beneath the mansions.
Asterix awakens the next day to find the village being besieged, and the Gauls are brought along to watch the village’s destruction. The Gauls keep the Romans at bay by pretending to still possess the magic potion, while Asterix makes his way to the mansions. Escaping into the apartments, Getafix brews the magic potion from ingredients in each of the rooms. The Gauls chase the Romans back to the Mansions, only to be captured once the Romans realise their deception. Asterix attempts to rescue them, but ends up in a poor condition from consuming an incomplete magic potion.
Caesar and Prospectus arrive to declare victory over the Gauls, until Obelix rises from underground, revived after consuming food from an arrival banquet disposed into his chamber. The Gauls get their magic potion and defeat the Romans in battle, and demand Caeser take the civilians to head back to Rome, finally leading to the demolition of the Mansions of the Gods. In tradition, the Gauls celebrate their victory with a banquet atop the ruins of the mansions. Back in Rome, Anonymus and Mischiefus get revenge on Caesar by throwing one of Getafix's acorns into his podium at the coliseum, leaving him dangling from a tree branch.
